Bucharest remains Romania’s most expensive city for renters, analysis finds

Bucharest is Romania’s most expensive rental market, with average monthly asking rents of EUR 400 for a studio and EUR 600 for a two-bedroom apartment, according to an analysis by property platform Imobiliare.ro and quoted by News.ro. Tenants seeking a three-bedroom apartment in the capital face an average rent of EUR 890 per month.

Rental demand is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as students search for homes in major cities before the start of the new academic year. The additional demand could also generate some price increases, Imobiliare.ro said.

“As every year, September marks the peak of interest in the rental market due to the additional demand generated by students,” said Daniel Crainic, marketing director at Imobiliare.ro.

“During this period, some landlords behave speculatively and try to obtain high prices. This is why we advise students to start searching early and secure their apartments in September, while there are still enough properties available.”

Studio rents in Cluj-Napoca are broadly similar to those in Bucharest, while two-bedroom apartments cost an average of EUR 580 per month.

In Brașov, tenants pay around EUR 350 per month for a studio and EUR 500 for a two-bedroom apartment. Meanwhile, average rents in Iași stand at EUR 340 and EUR 450, respectively.

A monthly budget of EUR 300 is generally sufficient for a studio in Craiova, Galați, or Ploiești, while a two-bedroom apartment in these cities costs approximately EUR 420.

According to the same analysis, Timișoara is the least expensive among Romania’s major university centers, with average rents of EUR 275 for a studio, EUR 440 for a two-bedroom apartment, and EUR 500 for a three-bedroom property.

The lowest studio rents among the cities included in the analysis were recorded in Oradea, at EUR 250 per month. Oradea and Sibiu also had the lowest average rents for two-bedroom apartments, at EUR 400.
